Your standard data cables are Cat 5, Cat 5e and Cat 6. Cat 5 is capable of 10/100 Mbps connections and is no longer being used for new installations. Cat5e is the most common at the moment and is capable of 1,000 Mbps (Gigabit) Speeds at 100MHz. Cat 6 is a major improvement over Cat 5e and is best to be used for new installations to “future-proof” your network, Cat 6 is capable of 10 gigabit speeds at 250 MHz.
When doing new construction or renovations I would always suggest wiring Cat 6 if possible.
Voice Lines – Cat3 cabling is a “voice grade” cable used for telephone lines. It is capable of handling data on it as well but only at a maximum of 10 Mbps. This is due to the two pairs of cables versus the four pairs of Cat5e and Cat6.
